Devlog 2

We have been learning a lot in class in just one week. We covered the basics such as the meaning of game design, experience goals, and the six elements of play design (action, rules, goals, objects, play space and players). But the biggest chunk of what we have been doing this week entails Folk Games. To be exact, folk games are traditional, ethnic, or indigenous sports and games that reflect culture. This all translates to games such as Capture the Flag, cornhole, etc. Folk games are known for their simplicity, minimal equipment requirements, and their openness to modification and eligibility. Folk games are especially great because while there can be a competitive edge to them, they also unify players through feelings of happiness. The best part of this week was being able to make our own folk game. The class was divided into groups of four and we were challenged with creating our own folk game with our own rules and guidelines. We were provided with various items to help us out such as hula hoops, cones, beanbags, etc. We were able to make our own version of cornhole that in our opinions, was an even more elevated version. We had two groups of two opposing players standing inside hula hoops holding a cone used as a baseball mitten or sorts and the goal of the game was that for every catch a player made, they would flip the hula hoop backward until one the teams made it to the wall behind them. First one to touch the back wall, wins. Overall, this was a great experience and I look forward to seeing what is in store for next week!
